RFP: Victorian Society New York “Emerging Scholars” (3/10/2020; 5/20/2020)

“Emerging Scholars”

Victorian Society New York

Sotheby's Institute of Art, New York

May 20, 2020

The Victorian Society New York invites young historians to submit proposals by March 10 for its annual "Emerging Scholars" event on May 20. VSNY (vicsocny.org), a nonprofit founded in 1966, supports scholarship about every aspect of 19th-century and early-20th-century culture, including literature, architecture, theater, fine and decorative art, politics, manufacturing, education, gender roles, reform movements, fashion, and food. Recent topics for emerging scholars have included celluloid collar advertisements, New York brothel furniture and a mining tycoon's luxurious dinnerware.

For the May event, VSNY will bring in three current university students or recent graduates to each give a 15-minute presentation. Deadline for 200-word proposals (preference given to American/New York topics) and CVs is March 10; email to info@vicsocny.org.

Speakers' remunerations include lively and delicious restaurant dinner with historians and enthusiasts after the talk and VSNY year membership ($30 value). The event will be held May 20, 6:15 to 8 pm with a reception, at Sotheby's Institute of Art, 570 Lexington Avenue (at 51st Street).
