Antipodean George Eliot provides the opportunity to examine George Eliot’s legacy from any and every angle. Papers will explore the dual senses of ‘antipodean’ as ‘Australasian’ and ‘in opposition to’, ranging across her writings from her earliest publication, a poem in the Christian Observer, to her challenging final work, Impressions of Theophrastus Such, in contexts that include Brexit, music, nineteenth-century science, and Bengali fiction.
Under the aegis of the School of Literature, Art and Media, The University of Sydney, and the Australasian Victorian Studies Association
