Proposals are invited for book chapter contributions to an edited collection entitle George Eliot and the Idea of Europe. Essays might consider, but should not be limited to such questions as: How is Europe constructed for Eliot? How does the idea of Europe inform her thinking? In what ways are her ideas of cultural inheritance and transmission shaped by the imagined opposition between Europe and ‘the East’? How do nineteenth-century European crises inform Eliot’s understanding of political, social and cultural history? Chapters might examine Eliot’s fiction, but we would also particularly welcome work on Eliot’s essays, letters, life writing and poetry.
Proposals and queries can be directed to Meredith Miller at MillerM4@cardiff.ac.uk
