2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the University of British Columbia Library’s acquisition of the Norman Colbeck Collection of Nineteenth Century and Edwardian Poetry and Belles Lettres. The Library, in conjunction with the Department of English, will host a one-day symposium on October 25th, devoted to Colbeck-related scholarship and research. Speakers include Florence Boos (University of Iowa), Kristin Mahoney (Michigan State University), Yuri Cowan (Norwegian University of Science and Technology), and Gregory Mackie (University of British Columbia).
The symposium is free and open to the public, but advance registration is required. More information, including online registration, is available at http://collections.library.ubc.ca/featured-collections/norman-colbeck-collection/.
Comprising over 13,000 volumes in addition to literary manuscripts and letters, the Colbeck is one of the most comprehensive collections of English and Anglo-Irish literature covering the period 1850-1920. The collection is also very strong in unique presentation and association copies of books by and about its representative authors, including Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Alfred Tennyson, Christina, Dante Gabriel, and William Michael Rossetti, William Morris, Oscar Wilde, Vernon Lee, and Michael Field.
