literary-londonGeorge Gissing and Born in Exile
Annual Literary London Society Conference
Institute of English Studies, the University of London
13-14 July 2017

2017 celebrates the 125th anniversary of Gissing’s Born in Exile (1892), a novel that addresses so many crises of faith—in religion, science, marriage, and class, for instance—in the nineteenth century. In celebration, the organisers invite contributions for proposed panels on Gissing and Born in Exile in the Annual Literary London Society Conference, held on 13-14 July 2017, at the Institute of English Studies in the University of London. Papers may explore any aspect of Gissing’s writing but they must speak to the conference’s focus: “Fantastic London: Dream, Speculation and Nightmare.” Papers might address:

  • Crises of faith
  • Illnesses
  • Questions of authorship
  • Marriage
  • Religion
  • Tradition
  • Science
  • Victorian realism
  • Exile
  • Shame
  • Adventurism
  • Disenchantment
  • Please submit your queries and abstract of up to 250 words and a brief biography of no more than 50 words to Dr Tom Ue at ue_tom@hotmail.com by 15 January 2017. Notice will be given by 20 January and the panel will be submitted for consideration on 1 February in accordance to the CFP (see http://literarylondon.org/conference/CFP2017.pdf).
