Dickens, Race, and Empire
Northeast Modern Language Association
Baltimore, Maryland
March 23-26, 2017
The Dickens Society is sponsoring a session at the 2017 Northeast Modern Language Association Conference on the topic of Dickens, race, and empire. There has been considerable recent interest in these issues, particularly as manifested by the Dickens Universe’s focus in the past few years upon Edwin Drood and The Moonstone, American Notes and Martin Chuzzlewit, and, for 2016, Dombey and Son. This session, which is intentionally framed in broader terms, will provide scholars the opportunity to approach the topic from a variety of perspectives and explore the whole range of Dickens’s production – from the canonical fiction to his lifelong engagement in daily and weekly journalism.
Proposals should be submitted through the NeMLA website (http://www.buffalo.edu/nemla.html) by September 30, 2016.
