Literacy and the Victorian Gothic

Scenes of acquired literacy and literary indoctrination abound in nineteenth-century Gothic plots. How does literacy relate to the Gothic conventions of autodidacticism, self-transformation, transgression, and otherworldly possession? Michael Field and the Arts
