CUNY Victorian Conference
CUNY Graduate Center, New York, NY
Friday, May 6, 2016

If you will be in or near New York on Friday, May 6, please come to the annual CUNY Victorian Conference at the CUNY Graduate Center (5th Ave at 34th St). It is free and open to the public, and it’s a great opportunity to hear world-renowned scholars in dialogue throughout the day.

This year’s topic is “Oceans 19: Currents in Victorian Transoceanic Studies.” The organizers anticipate an exciting day of thinking about oceanic work across scientific, global, political, ecological, literary, and cultural fields. What happens when we center our sense of the Victorian era on oceanic spaces instead of nations? How might water offer alternative ways of conceptualizing information, culture, and politics? Speakers at the conference will be Cannon Schmitt, Hester Blum, Margaret Cohen, Charne Lavery, Jason Rudy, and Christopher Taylor. The moderator is Maeve Adams and the keynote speaker is Amitav Ghosh.
